The outer leaves of Vallisneria species may be brown. When vallisneria (val) is planted in a new environment it grows new roots and new leaves from the centre of each plant. the outer leaves power the new growth and can be removed once the plant is established. The top of each leaf can be trimmed if desired. They may contain snails or eggs.
