Frequently Asked Questions

1. What are the best plants for Goldfish tanks?

Goldfish thrive with hardy plants such as:

  • Vallisneria:Giant, Corkscrew and Contortionist Val are aquarium classics, creating a natural river-bed environment.
  • Elodea: (Oxygen weed) Great cold water plant that is very easy for beginners to keep. It also produces oxygen during the day. (only available for QLD, VIC and ACT)
  • Varigated Rush: A long-lasting plant that grows where other plants may struggle. Attractive striped foliage.
  • Lemna minor 'Duckweed': Fast spreading, and ideal for Goldfish to eat.
  • Hairgrass: Available in pots and urns, this plant is fast-growing and can be trimmed like a lawn.

2. Do Goldfish eat live plants?

Yes, Goldfish and Black Moors often nibble on live plants. Choose hardy plants like Rush, Anubias and Java Fern that Goldfish are less likely to damage. Duckweed is actually delicious for Goldfish and is a very beneficial food source. Providing duckweed regularly may reduce Goldfish from eating your other plants.

3. Are live plants safe for Goldfish tanks?

Absolutely! Live aquatic plants provide oxygen, reduce nitrates, polish the water and offer hiding spots, creating a healthier environment for your Goldfish including Shubunkins.

4. Can I use artificial plants in a Goldfish tank?

Live plants are much preferred for their many benefits.

Artificial plants are safe, but ensure they are soft and free from sharp edges to avoid injuring your Goldfish. Fancy goldfish like Orandas and Ryukins should be protected from fin and scale damage.

Artificial plants can not improve water quality or provide food for the gold fish.

5. How do live plants benefit Goldfish tanks?

Live plants:

  • Absorb toxins like ammonia and nitrates.
  • Improve oxygen levels.
  • Provide a natural-looking habitat that reduces stress.
  • Help prevent algae growth by competing for nutrients.
  • Can provide healthy natural food for the Fantails, Comets and other gold fish.

6. How do I protect live plants in a Goldfish tank?

  • Choose hardy plants like Hairgrass and Vallisneria
  • Anchor plants to rocks or driftwood to keep them secure.
  • Use a good quality pellet or flake food for Goldfish and supplement their diet with duckweed.
  • Remember if Goldfish are eating your plants, they probably need the nutrients.

7. Do Goldfish need plants in their tank?

Alive aquarium plants greatly improve your Goldfish’s quality of life. Live plants create a healthier environment by improving water quality, mimicking their natural habitat, and reducing stress.
